My sling solo keeps freezing and disconnecting after a few seconds, any idea how to fix it?

Reset your box to default settings. Replacing power supply may also help.

I'm having the exact same problem.  We've got the latest firmware and slingplayer versions. I've reset the slingbox itself (by holding the reset button for 5 secs), rebooted my router etc.  I have multiple computers with slingplayer installed, all have the same problem, within 5-10 minutes of viewing, Slingplayer hangs and reports a connection problem.  This slingbox solo had previously been working flawlessly for over a year before this problem started happening a few days ago.  Everything else on the home network is working fine so I assume this is an issue with the device itself.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have reset the Sling Box and Tried different power supplies. No result Technical support told me that an answer may exist in the forum or community.  Could it possibly a router issue?

This seems to be an ongoing problem for most slingboxes out there. I have a Slingbox HD and i'm having the same problems. Looks like the new firmware crapped out the box. I really hope slingbox tech guys come up with a fix for this.

I remember it started freezing right after I tried the web application from dishnetwork.

For those of you like myself who're having freezing problems. Which firmware are you using on your Slingboxes? Mines the PRO-HD and i'm using 1.3.170

I have the exact same problem with a SOLO..... started around April 24 out of the blue. I tried everything even hooking it up to the DSL line just by itself to eliminate possible network problems on my side but it just keeps freezing like clockwork :-)

I feel a little better after reading all your posts I now believe that at least the hardware is OK....... I was getting ready to replace it

Guys, maybe it'll be useful to take a look in the following folder:

                          C:\Documents and Settings\all users\Application Data\sling media\SlingPlayer\2.0

In there you'll find SlingPlayerLog.txt which will tell you what kind of error you're getting. Here's what I've been getting while attempting to stream.

I don't have the fix.  I have the problem.  Another user and I have attempted to troubleshoot this, but I haven't had any success.  Here's a link to our conversations.  https://community.sling.com/message/2453#2453

If anyone finds a fix, please cross-post.  I'd appreciate it.

No resolution here either but I did today replace every network cable with Cat 6 cables..... also picked up an

EyeTV Hybrid USB stick for my Mac today and it streams just fine. At this point I am reasonable sure that my connection is not at fault.

Seeing all posts here leads me to believe that it's not a hardware issue either, so maybe we will find a fix eventually.

I sure hope so because I like the Slingbox better....

Had same problem, beginning a couple of months ago, with Slingbox AV. Starting out of the blue one day, Slingplayer, both on iPhone and PC, would freeze and have to be restarted, sometimes multiple times in an hour.  Streaming got slower and slower (often below 100 kbps), then stopped altogether. For a while, it would unexpectedly get better, and maybe for a week or more I'd get great streaming (700-800 kbps or more) for a while, then the freezes would start again.

Tried replacing power supply and when that didn't work, finally decided it was time to move on and buy Solo. (I use this for my job.) Hooked it up this morning and I'm still getting slow streaming (though picture's a little better at low speeds, particularly on iPhone, than I was getting with old one. But the results are nothing like that which I'd been getting for several years (and touting to everyone I knew). Plenty of bandwidth on our home network -- other things stream at 2000 kbps or more -- and I can find no evidence of problems with our Linksys router (or our Comcast modem, for that matter). My Slinglink could be the problem, I suppose, but since plugging old box directly into router didn't seem to speed things up (not that it's easy to test, since I don't have video source anywhere near router), I'm reluctant to spend one more cent on Slingmedia products till I know a bit more.

Could this be a software problem involving the Slingplayer? (I know some people are looking at firmware issues, but I can't remember the last time they upgraded the firmware on the AV, so I'm not inclined to look there for something that cropped up so recently.)

Has there been a surge in the number of complaints about slow streaming and/or freezes? I found something on the company's site that suggests there might have been and that it's looking for details, but interestingly, couldn't find any way of actually providing them that didn't involve calling a pay-per-call support line.

The problem with the freezing issue is that it can be caused by several  different things. One persons fix may not work for someone else. Especially when you are talking about different boxes.

In karyuudo0127's case tech support couldn't get it to act up but he does. Meaning it must have something to do with the location or setup that he is Slinging to.

Then there is problem that it could be caused by several issues of does it do this at home or via the internet. Are you connecting remotely via a TCP port forward or not. If using a Pro HD are you sending an H.264 video or WMV.

karyuudo0127 has posted a lot of his issues and what he has done to resolve them here, You might want to see if any of his changes help.

Best thing you can do is specifically explain what hardware you have, if it is a remote or local issue, how far your are slinging, you router setup etc. Maybe someone with a setup close to yours has figured out what fixed theirs and you can do the same.

I'm shocked that so many folks are having this problem and there is no documented fix from Sling...My environt variables are below.

                                        Sling box solo

                                        Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit

Happens on both Lan and Wan operations

Dlink router dir-655 (although sitll happens when connected to hub)

My setup has been working flawlessly for almost 2 years and I recently started having the same issue.

I thought it was a network problem with watching on my iPhone, but I have verified the same problem at home on my Acer Aspire One using Windows XP.

I only get about 2 to 3 seconds of connection before it fails.

I'm getting the following error message "Error: 0x923400dc"

While watching the Slingbox Solo, you can visually see that the box is resetting itself.

Problem occurs on both Slingbox AV and brand-new (out of the box this morning) Solo. Replaced power supply on AV only lasat week, to no avail.

                                              Both have latest firmware available.

Problem occurs on both LAN and WAN.

Problem occurs on every PC I've tried (three XPs, one Vista) and on my iPhone (both on home network and 3G) as well as at Slingbox.com.

Per suggestion, pinged yourslingbox.com. At the exact point that the MTU no longer asked to be fragmented (not sure that's the best way to express it), the operation showed as timing out. Changing router's default on MTU below 1500 had no effect whatsoever.

Ball's in Slingmedia's court. They wanted a forum -- let's see if they're interested in getting to the bottom of the problem. In the meantime, I'd recommend against trying to solve it by buying new equipment from them. So far, I'm out $150...

I'd be very surprised if persistent freezes turns out to be a hardware problem.  If you're thinking of replacing modems, routers, cables or power supply, forget it.  I've done all this, as have other users, and the freeze is always there.

It's becoming more clear that slingboxes just don't work.  There are too many problems streaming over different isp's and sling has redesigned their products in ways that have messed them up.  I used an old sling classic for years without problems.  Now I own both an AV and a Solo that don't work properly.

More importantly, there are no sling personnel paying attention to this issue or these postings.  There used to be free unlimited support.  Now you have to pay after 3-months and they still can't resolve the freeze-up issue.

Same experience with error 0x923400dc on my sling solo, after 1  year with no problems. the de-authentication appears randomly and does not seem to be tied up to the streaming bandwidth at that time. I thought that a slow streaming was the cause but I had it happen when everything was at high speed and working flawlessly. I have tried from many destinations to test the whether the error would happen and so far it is consistent, Europe ,West Coast and East Coast are getting the error. I have not tried to change the source. I need to try it with a different ISP. I have verizon FIOS and i do not think it comes from them (everything else is working). but if users have replaced their sling by a brand new one and are still getting the error then I am to question if ISPs have some something to do with it. (unlikely but still to be considered). If more and more sling owners are affected then pressure will build up.

                                                Just a thought.....

By any chance do you guys all own an iPad? Seems to me the problem started happening a few days after I got mine.

No, I don't own an iPad, but the problem did start about the time my iPhone app finally got upgraded to work on 3G. Coincidence? Probably. My guess is that people who own Slingboxes have a lot of of other tech toys around. No question that I became a much heavier user of my old AV with the app, first on my iPod Touch and then on my phone. And not being able to go more than a few seconds without a freeze (and on a brand-new Solo, too) is making me crazy, because this thing worked beautifully for years.

Now, I know this board is monitored because yesterday someone removed a post...... What kills me is that since this discussion is going on for weeks,

NO ONE from Sling Media seems to be concerned enough to post at least a  note and let us know that someone is looking into this problem....

You can add me to the list of people that this is happening to.  I can't play more than a few seconds of video (if I'm lucky) before the video freezes ("optimizing" for eternity, it seems).  This is happening with all of the following:

                                                      - Slingplayer Desktop

                                                      - Slingplayer Web on Firefox

                                                      - Slingplayer Web on Internet Explorer

                                                      - Slingplayer Mobile on iPhone

Because I have had the same result on every possible type of player that I can use, I can only assume that something is up with the Slingbox itself.

I downloaded the instructions and tried several times, but my slingbox will not connect long enough to run setup before it resets itself.

If I'm lucky, I can run it for 20 seconds before it resets.

Ingenious idea, but I'm afraid it didn't work for me. No effect on the freeze/stuttering/slow streaming problem and also couldn't view from outside the network. So I'm back where I started.

But appreciate the link to a forum that's not run by Slingmedia. Worse thing about the shutdown of slingcommunity is that all the old discussions (and solutions) seem to have disappeared, too.

And obviously, this problem isn't limited to the Solo.

I don't have an iPad, but I do have an iPhone 3G, and I just purchased the software and installed it on the phone and then all of these problems began.  Unless I am mistaken.  As far I can tell it only stays connected for the 20 or so seconds then locks and disconnects.

And yes, your feedback and help above are indeed valued. Particularly, the troubleshooting steps you've taken and the details you've provided.

As soon as we have more information, you can be sure that we will share it here.

We apologize for the frustration expressed in a few of the posts here. But please understand that this is technical support forum. Our engineers and our customers review the information provided here. Everyone can use that information to work on solutions to issues just like the one documented here. In this sense, the forum is as useful as we all wish to make it.

With that in mind, please limit further comments here to troubleshooting details, answers or help in finding an answer.

Abusive and off-topic comments will, however, get a thread locked faster than you can say "House Rules". Enough said.

Interesting that you said "our customers review the information provided here"  But that is a discussion for a later time.

One of the issues that is hard for an engineer to determine is if it is caused by a hardware problem.  What would help is if folks posted how old their Solo is and if the problem just started out of the blue or when they updated their firmware or made any other changes to their setup.

A great example of a hardware issue is the bulging capcitor problem as shown here. If you have tried everything else then you may want to look at the hardware. Don't take you Slingbox apart to do this if still under warranty but if not and you want to determine if that is the problem then take a look under the hood.
This would be a great help to the engineers to see if it is a hardware or software issue.

                                                                        - my iPhone appears fine over remote 3G.

Also, given Slingmedia's total silence on the issue that topic of this thread, how can you expect users discussing and trying to solve the problem not to speculate?  We're left with no choice.  Even for those of us that have paid for support, and still don't have a solution like myself.

I've been through four phone calls and a replacement router so far.  Still no solution in hand.  They did RMA a power supply, but I'm concerned that will not address the issue and I will have to call again.  I guess I'll find out soon enough when the power supply arrives.

In the meantime, I suggest easing up a little and allowing for an open discussion to take place and for people's posts with possible solutions be left on the board.  If they are really wrong about something, feel free to chime in and set the record straight.  I'm sure any input your team could provide would be much apprecieated by everyone following this thread.  Your current moderation style just looks like you're trying to sweep this issue under the rug and pretend it doesn't exist.

Most of you have been great in posting your troubleshooting and logs and keeping the flames to a minimum. I appreciate that, as it makes this thread easier for other customers to navigate.

Criticism of Sling is not necessarily a violation of the House Rules, but off-topic and inflammatory posts are. Comparing our moderators to communist China is not only flat-out silly, but distracts from the reason we're all here - to fix things. I'm on the side of fixing things, and I believe you are too.

Again, in the interest of helping us all, I ask for patience, less drama and more calm focus here. If you have nothing to add to the conversation other than gripes, don't bother to post because it will likely be pulled.

There is no visible swelling or other defects that appear on my box in addition I have also tried several power supplies with no success. I have also reset my device with no succeess. I find it disappointing that the only "free" assistance provided by technincal support is "You can find a solution in the forum" (quoting the sling support agent).Looking at all the posts and similar comments in this forum as well as those that existed in the Sling Community forum (which now no longer exists) it is very frustrating to discover that there is no root cause assessment available by Sling engineering to Sling technical support.Adding to the frustration is that lack of communication from Sling Technical support. It is apparent that the sling user community cannot resolve this issue.

It keeps freezing and the slingbox keeps resetting (it will disconnect the player and also the ethernet link goes off and then it come back up). I can see video maybe for a minute or two if I'm lucky.

This is so frustrating. All my connections are not working.

Since this is a support site you won't see posts that say "My Slingbox works perfectly" You will see posts about problems people may be having. There has to be thousands of Solo users out there that have no problem at all and are very happy.

I can connect for a few seconds, see something briefly pop up on screen, then the connection is lost.

I dont recall updating any firmware on the box or doing any changes on my routers. I also have a slingbox tuner and classic in the same network and they all work fine. I tried replacing the power supply but still getting disconnected. I started playing on the streaming settings. Lowering the resolution seems to have helped lessen the hiccups and allowed me to watch a few minutes longer rather than seconds but never more than 5 minutes before it disconnects again.

                                                                                                    • Call our tech support team

                                                                                                      • If you are within 90 days of purchase, it's all free.
                                                                                                      • If you are outside of 90 days but within your hardware warranty, there is a small fee for the tech support (which is refunded if it turns out to be a hardware issue!).
                                                                                                      • If you have purchased an extended care plan for your Slingbox, calls are free and the hardware warranty is extended for 3 years from date of purchase.
                                                                                                    • If after troubleshooting the support technician determines that the issue is a hardware failure, they will:
                                                                                                      • Process the replacement free of charge and refund the tech support fee if you are within your warranty period.
                                                                                                      • Charge a small fee for an out of warranty hardware replacement and, again, the tech support fee is refunded.

The best thing you can do is to keep participating in the discussion.  Prior to today's posts, we had but one lonely post from anyone at Slingmedia in the three or so weeks that this thread has been around.  That single post contained no troubleshooting steps to try or really any information to help diagnose or resolve the issue.  In fact, as far as I can tell, to date Slingmedia has not even so much as awknowledged that there may be a problem with some of the Sling Solo models.  I believe these issues are adding to people's frustrations.

My experience with the support proccess so far has also been frustrating, but I will reserve my judgement on that after we see how many phone calls and replaced parts it ends up taking to resolve the problem.

Regardless, thanks again for addressing the issues I raised and I encourge you to continue to participate in these discussions and hope that we can all get to the bottom of this sooner rather than later.

We the VALUED CUSTOMERS of Slingbox are getting the run around from you and your technical support.  I can understand if this was one, maybe two complaints about the same issue, but it is not, it is a lot of complaints about the same issue.  Add me to the list of having a $150 dust collector next to my TV.  It has been just about a month now that the connection problem has been happening and not one post from a Sling representative that just states "... We are aware of the problem and we are working on a fix as soon as possible."

I too also went out and purchased a new router... etc and still the same problem... Will anyone from Sling ever admit there is a problem?  How about a new firmware release (which should actually be a rollback) to see if that fixes the problem... that is just about the last shot of trouble shooting we all have left.

I am amazed that so many people are having the same problem starting more or less in the same period. Mine started approx. 3 weeks ago as well running my SlingCatcher over my TV or Computer in Germany (Slingbox in US). From one day to the next it started shutting down every few seconds (LAN or WAN). I called my ISP, had the line checked and serviced - to no avail. I called again and they sent me a new router. Again to no avail, although my internet works fine and fast so it is not a line problem.

My Sling products are also only 10 months old and having spent $400 on them I am less than thrilled to pay an additional $50 for tech support. After reading the posts on this thread I am not convinced that will help either.

I do not recall downloading new firmware - does it do that automatically? For a second I thought perhaps my "evil" ISP was slowing my connection because I was using up bandwidth. But after seeing these posts that is hardly realistic. Also, I don't believe it's a hardware problem since too many people started having these problems around the same time. It must be a software issue, something that was sent to the Sling products. Could it be a virus?

Since I am also paying the person in the US where the box is connected for this privilege I would like to see this fixed asap. Any news or bright ideas?

For me, I'm convinced that this is a hardware problem affecting some hardware models, particularly Sling Solo.

Why don't I think it's software?  Well, I've tried rolling back to older firmware and viewer software and still get the same problem.  I also have the same problem on a variety of platforms ranging from iphone to Mac to Windows and even Blackberry.  Also, Slingmedia's support team has determined that at least in my case there is a hardware problem.

Just because these devices worked before, and these issues all seem to be appearing at the same time does not mean that it's software related.  Do not discount the possibility that some of the components in the device may be faulty and start to fail after a a certain period of usage (mean time to failure may be exceptionally low for these components).  Especially given the fact that the device is designed to be left powered on all the time once installed.

Take from that what you will.  Do your own research elsewhere on the internet because it seems that any posts discussing or linking to details about the possible hardware issues I'm referring to are being removed from this forum for the reasons Dana mentioned.  Also keep in mind that if you open your device, or fiddle with the hardware in any way you will void your warranty.  This is why I've left my device untouched, despite the urge to confirm my suspicions.

I would also like to point out that because some posts are being removed (many for valid reasons), there have been more cases reported here than actually appear in the thread.

Finally, if this is the hardware issue that others and myself suspect it to be, it does not necessarily indicate shoddy manufacturing practices.  Many other respectable hardware companies (IBM for example) have suffered from similar issues in the past.  What will indicate a measure of Slingmedia's quality has a hardware company will be if and when they admit there is a problem, and then what actions they take to address the issue.

                                                                                                                Good luck!

I don't know yet.  My current status is I'm waiting for a power supply the Slingmedia's techs are sending.  Power supply just arrivied so I will report back on how well that works tonight.

Personally I don't think that's going to resolve the issue, but I will give it an honest try.  Either way, I will report back here what I find out.

If that doesn't resolve the problem, the next obvious step will be to replace the unit itself.  Again I will report back with my results.

Unfortunately, I will be out of town from May 15 through May 24 so it may be some time before I get a chance to try these things out.

If anyone else has solved this issue by replacing their hardware it would be nice if they could chime in.

With regard to the hardware issue that I think may be the problem, yes more than one person has taken it upon themselves to replace the faulty components and reported it resolved the issue, but you'll need to look elsewhere on the internet to find those results.  And we should all take the info out there in the internet with a grain of salt...

                                                                                                                          • Re: My sling solo keeps freezing

Finally, a bit of good news (for me, at least): After exhausting all the suggestions here (and seeing the brand-new Solo I'd bought to replace what I thought was my dying AV go from freezing to not connecting at all over the course of a week): I finally cleared time in my schedule this morning to call tech support. (Didn't cost me since I'd just bought a new Slingbox.)

The tech wanted to download firmware for my Slinglinks, but though all the lights were properly lit up, he couldn't connect to both of them -- the one nearest the Slingbox just wasn't connecting, even after I tried a different outlet. Meanwhile, plugging the Solo directly into the router did bring it to life, though it was hard to tell just how much life, since I didn't have a video source in that room. He recommended replacing my Slinglinks (they're a bit more than three years old, I think) with new ones, or with a wireless bridge. When I asked about Slingmedia's return policy should this suggestion not work, he recommended Best Buy for its 30-day return policy.

(By the way, given how much **** people have been giving to tech support -- not that I can blame anyone for not wanting to pay $30 a pop for non-solutions -- I should mention that the guy I dealt with seemed knowledgeable and once I'd listed all the things I'd already tried, didn't put me through those again, zeroing in on what turned out to be the problem.)

Long story short, I bought the Slinglink Turbo, plugged it into the router and even without replacing the Slinglink nearest the Slingbox, my Solo sprang to life and was quickly streaming above 2000 kbps, just as my old AV had until recently. Emboldened by this, I took the second Turbo adapter and tried it out on another cable box, with the old AV. Which suddenly isn't acting so old anymore. They're both slinging away on PCs throughout the house as well as on my iPhone. (One caveat: When I tried the Solo on the 3G network, it began to freeze every few seconds, just as it had when all this started.Same thing with the AV, though that one, ironically, seems to be able to go longer without freezing. And this may have more to do with the 3G signal in my house than anything else. I just tried it again and there's far less freezing than there was.)

No idea if this will work for anyone else on this thread (or whether it will even keep working for me).  I still wonder if there isn't something in either the iPhone software or something else that isn't putting increased demands on the equipment, but if you're using Sling's Ethernet bridge to connect your Slingbox, it's possible a new one might solve this problem. But perhaps you shouldn't buy it from Slingbox, since if it doesn't work, you might have trouble returning it.

Or  if your Slinglinks are still functioning, maybe you just need new firmware? I, for one, hadn't realized there was firmware for them.

I did open my slingbox solo to verify the capacitors. One of them appeared to be sweating some sulfiric waste. Once i plug back my slingsolo it was pretty much dead. I will replace the capacitor one of these day to try to fix it. So although this may be an issue on longevity on the hardware in my case it was not the cause of the freeze. it is however the reason why  I purchased a slingbox Pro (2 days old now) but the freeze still happens. currently i get around 20mn to 2 hours. The image quality is worse than sling box solo but I have not done any recalibration of the software on the player nor did i took time to verify any configuration. I just plugged the slingbox pro and went on trying the reliability. I will call in tech support after i have configure the hardware properly. the quest continues....

Certainly is a possibility.  I'm hoping that doesn't happen to me.

So after call number five, and being asked many of the same questions over again (is your router firmware up-to-date etc.) they've finally decided to send me a replacement unit.  In my opinion it shouldn't have taken a $50 support fee, five phone calls, a replacement router and a replacement power supply to get to this stage, but it is what it is.  Working with the support group gave me the impression that they want to blame the problem on everything else but their hardware.

For me I guess the $50 three year extended warranty and support is kind of a good deal, because who knows how long the replacement unit will last.  Another six or eight months maybe?  Perhaps by then Slingmedia will have a better handle on the situation.  I'm not, however intereseted in going through this rigmarole over and over again so if it comes to that, I'll seriously consider switching to MythTV.

                                                                                                                                  Good luck all.

You might wanna try getting one to see if it's defective. Costco has a great return policy also for those who need to take advantage of it.

I just got my slingbox today, so I know that it is not the hardware that is causing the problem. I have Verizon fios plus, which is a 25/25 connection. But right out of the box I am having the exact issues described from the first post on.

The first thing I did was portforwording to no avail. One thing that I found odd from the start was my video bit rate. Its stays at around 300`500, but then will jump randomly to 1025, I am assuming with my connection it should be much higher then that. The video starts off fine for a good 5 seconds, then just says "Optimizing..." and then its frozen for a good 7-10 seconds. The video begins streaming again but optimizing never goes away, and the video will just freeze again.

I even went so far as putting the Sling box in a DMZ, but that still did not work. I tried LAN and WAN, both of which did not work, Once and A while I will get a pop up box that says, "Current network conditions aren't good enough for your video settings. If you have changed streaming settings, consider going to encoding tab in Sling Player options and re-enable Slipstream Optimization." Even when this option is enabled.

Because of the way my connection works, I can not swap out the router for a different one.

I am running out of ideas and patients. If no one can come up with a fix for this I am going to return this thing to Bestbuy in a few days because I work there and if I take to long, they wont take it back  :X

Do you have an update of the "progress" your tech support people have done? Any firmware or software updates / any solution? Any tips? Any fixes? Anything we can do? BTW, how can we get a refund for the sling player mobile app? Thanks.

Customer Service needs to Acknowledge a known Hardware Failure is being worked on and a Solution will be posted when resolved.

Both working fine but I had to buy the newer model "solo" just so I can use it on my iphone. Also had to add its own cable box (not much of a problem today because of the digital switch). Including the iphone app and windows mobile app, thats time and money invested on tech thats been sitting for more than a month now.

I did try and tested using the tuner with the iphone app and could not connect. A phone call with the Sling tech support guy told me to buy the solo model to guarantee compatibility. I’ve never really thought of trying the classic since the newer tuner didn’t work. I’ll give this a try and see how things work.

It's confusing for everyone to have to wade through a crapload of off-topic posts before they get to anything resembling a solution. We understand and appreciate the frustration.
